Coatesville Custom Log Home for Sale

Built in the style of a barn, this Amish-built home comes furnished and equipped with just about everything you need to put the finishing touches on it.

This house looks like those old barns that dot the Chester County landscape, doesn’t it? But it’s not: it was custom-built by Amish craftsmen for its owners, who know their rustic Chester County style. It sits on a clearing in a wooded lot at 107 Baker Rd., Coatesville, PA 19320 | Bright MLS Pictures via New Precision Realty

Guess how long this house in West Brandywine Township, north of Coatesville, was built.

I guess your answer was not “2008”.

But that’s when this custom Amish-built Coatesville log home sprang up.

It just happens to look like an old converted barn, that’s all. The owners, who designed this house, know their rustic vocabulary.

Inside, however, it’s pretty clear that everything is new there. And the quality expected of Amish artisans should also be apparent.

Like most modern homes and barn conversions, this home’s entry hall leads to an open ground floor that makes entertaining as easy as it is relaxing.

The first space you see beyond the stairs to the second floor, however, is the kitchen. It has Corian countertops, custom wood cabinetry, and a stove with a downdraft exhaust fan in its island, leaving the space free from the intrusion of an extractor fan. It also has the plumbing in place for a second sink and pot filler, two of the many things you can – and in some cases should – do to complete the owners’ original vision.

Next to the kitchen is the dining room, which is open to the two-story great room just beyond.

Large bedroom and dining room

This and the dining room share the soapstone wood stove as a central feature. The oak floor, however, is the main source of heat thanks to an energy-efficient hydronic radiant heating system that heats both the main floor and the unfinished basement.

You can also see hints of Arts and Crafts style in the balcony and stair railings.

Substantial log beams support both the ceiling and the balcony. Across the hall from the kitchen are the pantry, two bedrooms and a bathroom. All but the tiled bathroom have engineered wood floors.

Behind is the master suite. It has a huge bedroom flanked by double cedar closets. Its large windows let in the morning sun.

Likewise, the master bathroom has south-facing windows that let in sunlight all day. It sits above the front door and has a bath, walk-in shower and two sinks.

You might notice while browsing these photos and the others on the agency’s website that some closets don’t have doors. Folding doors for these are some of the things you will need to complete this home.

You will need to purchase these doors, but some other items needed to finish the house are stored in the unfinished basement, including: the log sheathing to finish the attached two-car garage whose foundation has already been poured, cans of paint to finish the unpainted vestibule and attic walls, and trim for the door and window frames.

In addition to these checklist items, the main suite windows must be completed; replacements for the current windows have been ordered and need to be installed. And the hydronic radiant heating system of the master suite must also be connected; the owners have ordered the necessary supplies but have not yet received them.

But the owners assure you that none of this will mean you will spend shivering nights in your master bedroom. The house is said to be very well insulated and stay warm longer than those of its neighbours.

Finally, the basement has rough plumbing in place for a sump pump and a full bathroom. It can also accommodate two additional bedrooms, as the windows are large enough for an emergency escape. The basement also has sliding doors leading out to the backyard, which also suggests it can handle a playroom.

Another unusual feature of this custom Coatesville log home for sale is the wireless lighting controls, a technology that was new when the home was built. Command senders and receivers have been updated. And all bedrooms and the attic have telephone and cable connections.

It also sits on partly cleared but otherwise wooded land that protects this house from its neighbors and the road it sits on. And it’s not that far from downtown Coatesville, where some Amtrak trains stop; the nearest SEPTA regional rail station is in Thorndale, a little further southeast.

Considering the unfinished work that remains to complete this house, you will no doubt be pleased to hear that the furniture you see here goes with it. But even in its not quite finished state, this home is a real looker that blends comfort with sophistication and rustic charm.
