How to Make a House Feel Like Home, According to the Founders of Canyon Coffee
For anyone with a good coffee habit, the key word is ritual. Ally Walsh and Casey Wojtalewicz, partners and co-founders of Canyon Coffee in Southern California, see the rituals that surround coffee as a way to connect with each other, and they say these processes have a way “to add beauty and warmth to everyday life”. Of course, like any habit, a measured approach is best.
Now with their first child, Ally and Casey are settling into a new home, and decorating has been an equally deliberate process. “We prefer to let furniture and special pieces come to us,” they say. But until the universe provides it, the elements below didn’t hesitate to roll the ball to a warm and welcoming home filled with intentions.
“We love the warm, soft glow and unique feel of Isamu Noguchi’s Akari lamps. The name, Akari, translates to light as illumination, but also evokes the idea of weightlessness.”
“The Always Pan lives up to its name. Since we got ours, we’ve been using it multiple times a day! It’s a very well-designed non-stick pan, and we appreciate the tasteful color options.”
“We were fans of Bathing Culture even before we tried their soap – for their branding, their eco-consciousness and the way they epitomize Northern California. But it turns out we’d be fans of them for the scent and quality of their soap alone! We started a subscription. Win-win.”
“With a new home and a baby on the way, it was time for us to size up our mattress. We opted for the Avocado Vegan mattress, and we’re so grateful for that, as we’ve been sleeping so well ever since. (Yes, even with a newborn!) We also kept it in-house and opted for the City bed frame from Avocado to make the whole bed search a breeze.”
“We are truly proud and grateful to work with amazing ceramic artists for Canyon Coffee. Monica Galan is one of our favorites! Based in Highland Park, she always keeps a fine selection of mugs, bowls, vases and artwork. art on his online store.”
“Great news, these grinders only get better with age as they are used and worn, making this an investment we have never looked back on. These are simple yet special additions to our kitchen that enhance the feel, and they’re probably the most often noticed (and complimented) by customers!”
“We love the warmth of lighting water on our stove every morning for our coffee ritual. This kettle, made by Kaico in Japan, is an expertly crafted enamel kettle to stand the test of time.”
“Being in the specialty coffee industry, we also appreciate the speed and precision of electric kettles down to the degree! Fellow has been around for a few years and they have really won us over with their Stagg EKG Electric Kettle. Its simple design is very intuitive and easy to use.”
“This duvet has brought a whole new level of comfort to our nights and mornings! Sonny (our newborn) loves to lay on it and watch the morning light come up while mum and dad try to get a few extra minutes of sleep. “
“We’re big fans of the two-tier design of these end tables, which allow us to store books and other accessories underneath for a cleaner top, making the room feel a little calmer. They’re also very affordable compared to similar products!”
“We’d be remiss not to include the coffee-brewing ritual that started it all for us! We love the Chemex for its timeless glass and wood design and the smooth, delicious coffee it brews. In this set, we pair an eight-cup coffee maker with filters and a bag from Canyon, so you have everything you need to start your own morning ritual.”
“While mindfulness of the pouring ritual has been at the heart of Canyon, we also have a special affinity for the patient practice of cold brew! This cold brew bottle, crafted by the glass experts at Japanese company Hario, adds beauty and ease your cold brew ritual at home.”
“We strive to source organic products whenever possible, and Baina’s thick cotton towels are a no-brainer! We also appreciate their affinity for rituals and the fact that they are a different company founded by women.
“We’ve had a new appreciation for baskets since we got Sonny! It’s a simple yet beautiful way to add storage to the home for everything from clothes to toys to random accessories. We love these baskets of our friends at the general store. They are handmade from Napier grass by the Fair Trade Federation, a group of Ghanaian artists.”
