Jared Leto (House of Gucci) Could Finally Win This SAG Award Bookend

‘House of Gucci’ was all but ruled out by the Oscars, earning only one bid for Best Makeup and Best Hair. Conversely, it earned three SAG Award nominations. The cast of this crime drama battles it out for best ensemble as Lady Gaga and Jared Leto deserved a mention for their portraits of revenge Patrizia Reggiani and unhappy Paul Gucci respectively.

Of this trio of bids for Guild Honors, Leto is in the best position to pull off an upset in Best Supporting Actor. He certainly enjoys a higher level of recognition with SAG voters than favorites Kodi Smit McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) and Troy Kotsur (“CODA”). And his immersive, flawless performance just might earn votes from many of his peers. Indeed, he won here in 2014 for another transformative performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Leto’s turn as the black sheep of the Gucci dynasty may have been polarizing but might appeal to SAG voters. They have a habit of rewarding unrecognizable performers in their roles. Gary Oldman won here recently for his rendition of the portly Winston Churchill in “The Darkest Hour”. Similarly, skinny Leto is unrecognizable under all those prosthetics and in a fat suit.

Beyond this physical metamorphosis, Leto delivers an oversized performance with a range of emotions reminiscent of his co-star Al PacinoTony Montana’s turn in “Scarface”. And he does all of this while delivering his dialogue with an Italian accent.

Unlike the film academy, the voting body SAG-AFTRA represents a wide variety of professions not exclusive to the film industry. Following SAG’s merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) in 2012, members now also include “announcers, broadcasters, journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers , news writers, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers and voice-over artists. In such a large constituency, campaigning can only get your movie so far; commercial success begins to exert greater influence.

House of Gucci” grossed over $150 million at the worldwide box office. Among Leto’s rivals for Best Supporting Actor, bradley cooperR’s film “Licorice Pizza” topped the box office, grossing $25 million worldwide. Four years ago Emily Blunt was in the same situation as Leto before the SAG Awards. She had been snubbed by the Oscars for her turn in the hit “A Quiet Place” (more than 350 million dollars worldwide). But she got a win here.

And remember, the SAG Awards nominating committee was so in love with Ridley Scott‘s crime family saga that he awarded him a bid for best ensemble on the likes of “The Power of the Dog,” “West Side Story” and “Licorice Pizza,” all of which earned individual nominations.
