Stores in the area experience shortages of cat and dog food | News
AGAWAM, MA (WGGB / WSHM) – Shoppers are seeing bare shelves in stores and we’ve learned it’s not just a shortage of groceries.
If you’re struggling to find food for your four-legged family members, you’re not alone. Pet stores in western Massachusetts are experiencing a shortage of cat and dog food. As you walk the aisles of Dave’s Soda and Pet City, you’ll find empty shelves and signs warning shoppers that their favorite brands may be out of stock.
Owner Dave Ratner said there is currently a shortage of several types of pet food.
“I’m assuming we’re at a minimum of 30% out of stock,” Ratner explained.
Ratner told Western Mass News he had dealt with supply issues even before the pandemic since closing one pet food factory, before reopening another.
“You had a shortage of manufacturers, of capacity, because they didn’t open this new factory,” Ratner added.
He said the pandemic had resulted in further staff shortages and delays on top of this shortage of manufacturers and with more pet owners the demand had increased.
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB / WSHM) – If you’ve been shopping lately you’ve probably noticed empty store shelves as supply chain issues continue…
“You have to dispatch the workers, you have to do it. Now they are running twice a day. Everyone has adopted a pet, so the demand is skyrocketing,” noted Ratner.
Ratner said several brands of pet food have also struggled to find all the ingredients they need after several countries have closed their ports.
“There is a shortage of vitamins, so every pet food has a vitamin pack to make it complete and balanced. Well, there is a shortage of vitamins,” Ratner said.
What if you can’t find your pet’s food? Ratner said dogs can usually get enough nutrients from homemade food, but cats can’t because they can be picky. If you’re having trouble finding pet food for your feline, Ratner suggested you try looking at other brands of food with similar ingredients.
For example, if your cat only eats tuna, but you can’t find your specific brand, try picking up a few cans of different brands of tuna to see if they’ll appreciate it instead.
Ratner said customers come in looking for out-of-print items every day and this problem may persist for a bit longer.
“I don’t see it getting any better for six or seven months,” Ratner said.
