A baby mountain goat, female and barely a week old, can claim to have three guardian angels. Rural guards Manuel Lorenzo and Julio Fernández, along with Francisco Gallardo, a local police officer from Frigiliana, came to his rescue last week after he was trapped on the roof of a kennel in the area of Montecillo Ariza, in the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park.

The owner of the land called for help after his dog, a mastiff, kept barking and he realized the goat was stuck on the roof of the kennel. The animal was exhausted and had not eaten for more than 12 hours, although when he is so young he has to nurse every hour. Fortunately, Julio Fernández’s father kept goats and was able to provide half a liter of goat’s milk which they gave to him after bringing him down from the kennel.

The next day, when she had recovered, Fernández returned to the area near where she had been found and spotted her mother. Very patiently he waited, and when she was near he released the baby, so that he could find her. So luckily there was a happy ending after what could have been a very unfortunate incident.

This is not the first goat that these two rural guards have been involved in rescuing. In December, they helped one who had been trapped in a poaching trap, which was the second such incident. Before that, their only rescue had been human: a couple of hikers who got lost on their way between Frigiliana and the Chíllar River.
